Hey mamas! If you’re here, it probably means that you are awaiting the arrival of your sweet new baby. If so, congratulations! As an expectant parent, I’m sure your to-do list is long, and ever-growing. I’m here to help take one item off of your list by helping you explore the absolute best time for maternity and newborn photos. These moments are pure magic, filled with love, anticipation, and the joy of new beginnings. So, gather ’round, and let’s dive into this heartwarming world together.
Let’s start with the magical world of maternity photography. Pregnancy is such a special time in a woman’s life, filled with excitement and anticipation. But when is the best time to capture that radiant pregnancy glow? Well, my dear friends, the ideal time is usually around the 7th to 8th month of pregnancy. I typically recommend anywhere between weeks 25 and 33.
Why, you ask? During this period, most moms-to-be have that lovely baby bump beautifully on display, and they’re still feeling pretty comfortable. It’s the sweet spot where the belly is prominent, and yet, it’s not too close to the due date, allowing for a relaxed and enjoyable photo session.
When planning your maternity session, consider scheduling it during the “golden hour.” This is the magical time shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sunlight is soft, warm, and oh-so-flattering. It’ll make your photos glow with a touch of enchantment. This is when I typically hold outdoor maternity sessions, because I love the extra warmth it gives to such beautiful moments!
Now, let’s shift our focus to your sweet new baby! The best time for those adorable newborn photography sessions is within the first two weeks after birth. Why so soon? Well, it’s during this time that your precious little one is at their sleepiest and most flexible. I have found that there is a bit more flexibility with lifestyle photography, allowing an up to 4 week window for those who prefer to wait. However, the ideal is within the first two weeks as mentioned above.
Around days 5 to 10 after birth, your baby is in what we call the “sweet spot” for newborn photography. They’re still all curled up and have that irresistible newborn squish. Plus, they tend to sleep more soundly, making it easier to capture those angelic, dreamy shots. This is the timeframe where we can document all of the newborn details that will change oh so quickly in the coming weeks. It also allows us to document the brand new connection you have with your precious little one.
When it comes to setting the scene for your newborn photos, think warm and cozy. Soft blankets, neutral onesies, and gentle lighting are key ingredients for creating a soothing environment. We want your baby to feel snug as a bug while we work through your session. Lifestyle newborn sessions can be held in the comfort of your own home, or outdoors if the weather is warm enough! While I do love an outdoor newborn session, there is something so special about photographing a brand new baby in their home as they create a new space in the family.
If you have older children who are excited to welcome their new sibling, I recommend including them in both your maternity and newborn photo sessions. These sibling moments are heartwarming and add a special touch to your family album. It’s all about capturing the love and connection that makes your family unique.
One more thing to keep in mind is the season. Delaware, southern New Jersey, and the Jersey shores all experience beautiful changes throughout the year. We know that many mamas do not or are not able to choose the season they get pregnant, so remember to go with the flow! No matter if you get the vibrant colors of autumn leaves, the fresh blossoms of spring, the snowy neutrals of winter, or the sunny days of summer, each season offers its own unique backdrop for your maternity and newborn sessions.
And as a Philadelphia Maternity Photographer, I have to mention the city of brotherly love! If you’re in the Philly area, there are countless picturesque spots to choose from for your maternity session. Whether it’s a scenic park, a historic street, or even the iconic Rocky Steps, Philly provides a stunning backdrop for your family’s story.
So, to recap, the best times for maternity and newborn photography sessions are when the magic is at its peak. For maternity, it’s around the 7th to 8th month, during the golden hour. For newborns, aim for the sweet spot within the first two weeks after birth, when your baby is at their sleepiest and most flexible.
Remember to create a warm and cozy atmosphere for your newborn’s session, and consider involving older siblings for extra sweetness. And don’t forget to take advantage of the beauty of the changing seasons in your area, whether you’re in Delaware, southern New Jersey, the Jersey shores, or the charming city of Philadelphia.
Capturing these precious moments is like freezing time, so you can cherish them for years to come. I would love to help you create a beautiful collection of memories that will warm your hearts forever. Until next time, keep smiling and capturing the beauty of life!
