As a smaller city, it may seem like there wouldn’t be much in the way of outings or entertainment. But with these 5 things to do in Wilmington DE, you are bound to find something fun! Whether you are new to town, a visitor, or a lifelong Delawarean, these places are always fun to visit and explore.

Things to do in Wilmington DE

1. Marshall Steam Museum

This museum is a part of the Friends of Auburn Heights, and boasts world’s largest operating collection of Stanley steam cars and a Lionel electric train display for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Though there are limited hours, they host additional event days for the whole family to come and have fun.

Our favorite day to visit the museum is on one of the monthly Steamin’ Days. Once a month, visitors can climb aboard an antique car and a steam train, along with still viewing the collections in the Museum itself. Oh, and fresh steam-popped popcorn is included with your admission! If you or your kiddo are train or car lovers, this is a great place to check out!

2. Coverdale Farm Preserve

When looking for things to do in Wilmington DE, Coverdale Farm Preserve is a must do! They are open April through November, and have a ton of activities for all members of your family. If you want to just get out for some fresh air, then you can walk the farm and pasture trail while taking in the beautiful views. On the weekends, the farm is bustling with games and activities, as well as an amazing market.

Since the preserve is part working farm, there is the added benefit of being able to participate in u-pick flowers, herbs, and vegetables throughout the summer! I absolutely love all of the options and activities available, because it really makes it something the whole family can enjoy.

3. Wilmington & Western Railroad

Can you tell our family loves trains? This is one of our favorite activities in the area, and even more-so because it is available year-round! The Wilmington & Western Railroad is a wonderful option for an outing different than the norm. With different themed rides throughout the year, you can choose the one that fits your family best, or ride them all for variety! On the Yorklyn Limited ride, you can pack a picnic, and enjoy a mid-ride break in Mt. Cuba Picnic Grove before boarding again to get back to the station.

Whether you are looking for a family ride, a grown-up’s night out, or a unique way to celebrate a birthday, there are options for every age and interest. From Santa, to superheroes, to a craft brew sampling, you are sure to find a ride that fits what you are after.

4. DuPont Environmental Education Center

“Where the city, river, and marsh meet”, the DuPont Environmental Education Center is a wonderful place to go exploring with your family. The center itself hosts camps and youth exploration options, while the land around it has trails of various types to enjoy. If biking is something your family enjoys, make sure to check out the Jack A. Markell (J.A.M.) trail, which will take you from the center all the way down to Old New Castle. However, if water is more your jam (ha, see what I did there?), head through the center to the boardwalk trails along the marsh.

We have done both trails, and absolutely love that we can choose which fits our speed for that day. Walking along the trail in the marsh gives you views of the city, along with the ability to spot wildlife in and near the water.

5. Constitution Yards

After checking out all of the above options, you’re sure to want a place to go and relax. Well, Constitution Yards can be that place. With food, drink, and a giant sandbox, the whole family can come and hang for an afternoon. Or, if you are looking for a night out without kids, make sure you check out axe-throwing, hosted seasonally by Wilmo Axe. On Friday and Saturday nights, they have live music, and are always dog friendly, so feel free to bring your doggie family members!
